Whether doing assigned seating or free-for-all seating at your reception, always have at least one full overflow table for guests.  This way, if you forget someone in your assigned seating list or someone who didn't RSVP shows up {happens all of the time}, you have a seat for them.

As a rule of thumb, tables can accommodate the following seating:
72" round table - seats 10 comfortably but seats 12 max
60" round table - seats 8 comfortably but seats 10 max
48" round table - seats 6 comfortably but seats 8 max
8' long table - seats 8 comfortably and can seat 10 if using end caps of tables
6' long table - seats 6 comfortably and can seat 8 of using end caps of tables
