When planning the ceremony, some couples want to not only recognize their own union, but the union being formed between their families as well. Including your family in the ceremony can be a wonderful way to honor them and let them know that they will be an important part of the family you are creating with your new spouse! Here are some fun ways to make your family a part of your day! 1. Unity Ceremony If you are planning a sand or candle lighting ceremony, include a candle or jar of sand for your parents. They can join you at the altar to participate in the ceremony like in the photos above. If a wine box ceremony is more your style, have family members write letters to you and your new spouse and purchase a special bottle of wine. They can seal these with your letters and wine or in a separate box. You can open these letters on your honeymoon or anniversary and read their loving words while enjoying a glass of wine together! 2. Prayer Have family members join you at the altar to say a prayer over the two of you and your marriage. This can be a quiet, intimate moment or you can allow all of your guests to hear their loving words. 3. Readers Have a family member read a passage of scripture, a meaningful poem, or a personal message they have written to you. 4. Ring Warming Before the rings are exchanged, have them passed to each family member. As they receive the rings they can warm them with their hands and say a prayer or blessing over your marriage. This is a great option for shy family members who may not want to be the center of attention! 5. Family Vows In addition to saying vows to each other have your family write vows and read them to you during the ceremony. These could include promises to support each of you and your marriage, offer encouragement and guidance, or to simply share in the joy and love you have for one another! 6. Flower Girls and Ring Bearers If you want a more lighthearted way to include your family, ask them to be your flowers girls or ring bearers. Have your sisters, moms, or even grandmothers decked out in tulle showering the aisle with petals or have the guys suited up as your ring security team! Have fun and put a smile on your guests’ faces! 7. Honoring Family Members A great way to honor those who have passed on and cannot be there on wedding day is to include photos of those family members. Having their photos walked in by grand or great-grandchildren is another way to include family in the ceremony. Photos via Logan Howard Photography of ATP couple, Lauren+Lance! xoxo! -Nyssa
